Jasper Blalock’s twangy Carolina words reverberated in my head as I studied the daguerreotypes of Pansy’s parents and grandparents on the mantle above the oversized fireplace. He refilled well used cups, and I asked about Pansy’s ostrich eggs.

Leaning forward with both hands on his knees, causing the old sofa to groan, he pressed tight lips together saying firmly, “Pansy’s ostrich eggs ain’t fer sale” his voice emotional. “We talked ’bout all that when she turned the place over to me and the boy . . . I gaver my word.”

He coughed. “Ya see” he turned ernest eyes to Andy, “Pansy never sold this place, she jest took some of the money I got fer my old farm down the road, which wer’nt much, pulled the money her Maw left her in the old tin can, an took off, like my Maw usta do wif a fistfula milk money. Pansy’d never break her word to you or her Pappy. An she only took one unpainted egg wifer.”
